Helping families of individuals with autism and other developmental differences prepare for wandering emergencies — because every second counts.
What Is the Safe Return Program?
Wandering — also called elopement — is one of the most dangerous and common challenges faced by families of individuals with autism. Nearly half of all children with autism have wandered at some point, and the risks are serious.
The ATA Lopez Foundation's Safe Return Program connects families with free resources, ID tools, and community education to help keep their loved ones safe and ensure a swift return if they ever go missing.
What This Program Provides
ID & Tracking Resources
We help families access free and low-cost identification tools so first responders can quickly identify and return a missing individual.
- Assistance enrolling in the National Autism Association's Big Red Safety Box program
- Guidance on GPS tracking devices and wearable ID options
- Help registering with local law enforcement wandering registries
- Door and window alert system recommendations
Family Safety Planning
We work with families to create a personalized safety plan before an emergency happens.
- Creating a current photo and information packet for first responders
- Identifying high-risk locations and preferred destinations
- Developing communication strategies for non-verbal individuals
- Reviewing home safety modifications and environmental supports
First Responder Education
We partner with local law enforcement, fire departments, and EMS to improve their response to wandering incidents.
- Community training on autism awareness and de-escalation
- Sharing sensory and communication considerations with first responders
- Connecting agencies with national wandering response protocols

Community Awareness
Neighbors and community members are often the first to spot a missing individual. We help build a network of informed, compassionate community members.
